HUI ALOHA PU'UKAPU COMMUNITY GRAZING PROJECT

There are critical water infrastructure and critical fire breaks within Pu‘ukapu Pastoral Hawaiian Homestead Lots (PPHHL) surrounded by unused or ungrazed land creating high fire fuel loads of thick grass and vegetation.  As a step toward meeting our mission, we have implemented a Community Grazing Plan within our Community Safety & Outreach Program efforts. The intent is to collectively create a land stewardship program driven and operated by our community to protect our critical water infrastructure and maintain the critical fire breaks that help to protect our homes, livestock, and our families.

Hui Aloha Pu‘ukapu (HAP) embarked on a smaller-scale community grazing plan prior to formal incorporation and following the 2021 Mana Road Fire, that ravaged our community. In the midst of chaos and burn, HAP became central command and coordinated and transported community livestock outside of the critical fire zone. This also included maintenance of required services such as water, feed, fence repair, and access to the community livestock. HAP convened council members and community stakeholders to address critical needs and concerns regarding long-term fire mitigation. HAP continues to support community grazing needs as a result of the fire.

The Primary Purpose is centered around fire fuel mitigation and land stewardship, achieved through community grazing efforts. This innovative approach is multifaceted, addressing several critical aspects relevant to the PPHHL community.

The foremost objective of this program is to reduce fire fuel loading. By managing the vegetation through grazing, this project aims to significantly lower the risk of wildfires. This reduction in fire fuel directly contributes to a safer living environment for the PPHHL community.

This project Emphasizes the importance of land stewardship and encourages best management practices for grazing. By engaging our community in active land management through grazing, the project fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to the land, promoting sustainable and respectful use of natural resources.

The primary goal of our project is to develop and implement effective grazing rotations throughout both already grazed and ungrazed lands within PPPHL. This strategic approach in land management is not only beneficial for the PPPHL community but also neighboring communities

Our program also aims to develop and deliver education outreach materials and workshops to existing pastoral homestead lessees to enhance understanding and participation in community grazing initiatives while we work toward recovery & resiliency.
